One Day Nature trail for G5&6 of NPS Kudlu at Organic farm and garden at Hosur, Tamil Nadu on 5th Aug 2024
“Sustainable farming”
A visit to livestock and organic farm was more than just about cows and sheeps for G5&6 students of a school.
The self sustaining farm not just grows its own organic vegetables and fruits but also
fodder through hydroponics. Besides this, it also generates healthy compost and manure.
The value and contribution of cow, and its products like milk, butter, by product – dung & urine (cow gut contains maximum soil enriching bacteria and microbes) which is useful for nutrition rich soil were learnt by students. Biodiversity in and around the farm was observed and appreciated by them.
These self sustaining practices has helped this land transform into a beautiful green field, attracting lots of birds and butterflies to the farm.
Tree and plant selection are also varying and support biodiversity to grow. From vegetables to fruits(mango, banana, papaya, guava, pomegranate), from flowering to umbrella trees like Figs (keystone species), Neem, moringa are enhancing biodiversity and enriching the soil.
The rain water harvesting and check dams has not only increased the water levels but ensures year long water supply for the farm animals.
More education trips should be organised and encouraged to teach values of nature based solutions rather than just resorts, which will connect them better and develop understanding for saving our environment and forests.
