NHVPS RR Nagar report
1. Â July– School Garden- The first topic bought the excitement in students and they worked with enthusiasm to plan their dream garden in school. Gardens play an important role in providing an opportunity to students to connect with nature in their own backyard, learn about plants, soil, insects and their inter- dependencies.Â
Students planted some medicinal plants in the campus and took oath to maintain them.
2. Â August– The interlinking topics of Role of Forests, Insects were explained to students through PPT presentations, short videos and case studies from across the globe.
Students started going around the school campus, documenting the biodiversity of the campus. In this way they started understanding the connection’s between all organisms.
3. Â September– Students learnt about the roles of urban trees as they provide resources, absorb carbon,provide oxygen, food and shelter to all life forms. They learnt about their main role as climate, carbon, nutrition and water regulator in nature.
Along with the tall growing trees students paid attention to the value of dead and decaying trees on how they provide habitat for insects, lizards and other tiny organisms, transfer nutrients with the help of decomposers back to the soil.
4. October– Theme of the month was Importance of Birds as Pest controllers, pollinators, food providers. Students started observing various birds in their natural habitat and their adaptations to thrive in various ecosystems.
Students started documenting the nesting sites of many birds in the trees. The middle school students made some bird feeders, nests using recyled materials and hung them at various locations in the school.
5. November– Students learnt about the very important role Soil plays in serving as medium for life and food. Thus how valuable they are for the health of our planet.
They studied the soil in the school garden and compared it with other locations soil to understand how healthy trees compliment healthy soil. Students also learnt bout the important role of Soil engineers like ants, termites, earthworms, slugs, millipedes in recharging and rotating the nutrition and carbon in the top soil.
6. December– The students learnt about Importnace of lakes and their roles in mitigating floods, recharging ground water and providing habitat to many aquatic biodiversity. A field trip to RR Nagar lake was organised for both Middle and High school students, where they observed, documented and analysed various problems associated with urban water bodies like water pollution, sewage dumping which leads to eutrophication.
